The Museo Cerralbo has a long history. It was founded by Don Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo (1845-1922), who combined his devotion to politics and history with sensitivity towards the fine arts during his entire lifetime. He toured Europe with his family, visiting museums and acquiring works of art, thereby amassing a magnificent collection which, together with the coin and medal, book and document holdings, numbers over 50,000 items. Its quality and the diverse fields it encompasses led it to be considered the most complete private art collection in the country. His wife, Doņa Inocencia Serrano Cerver, and his stepchildren Don Antonio and Doņa Amelia del Valle Serrano, Marquis and Marquise of Villa Huerta, contributed significantly to its formation.
Paintings, sculptures, ceramic ware, glassware, tapestries, furniture, coins, medals, drawings, prints, clocks, weapons, suits of armour, archaeological objects and other items afford the building its special charm. In addition to being a significant example of an aristocratic residence, it provides visitors with a glimpse of daily life in Madrid with its literary gatherings, balls and lounge secrets....
Virtual visitors will now find a gallery of images of the Museo Cerralbo collection. The most noteworthy or fascinating items have been selected for this purpose and are grouped into 11 different sections to facilitate their viewing:
